Popo Global Raises ₹532 Crore The Pizza Bakery Big Expansion Story

Two brothers’ effort at making one great pizza in Bengaluru has been transformed into one of India’s most silently fascinating restaurant tales. Popo Global which is the parent company of The Pizza Bakery, Paris Panini, and Smash Guys recently bagged 532 crore from the global investment fund Artal Asia. This transaction, besides being a company’s initial external round funding, also symbolises the first new, meaningful stage of a brand that hasn’t done much beyond home city till today. The story commenced with the opening of The Pizza Bakery, an Italian artisanal pizza brand which was set up to focus on top-notch quality and the same quality over and over at the place of sale, and which managed to build a large following in Bengaluru through these factors.

The brand was started in 2017 and the brothers Nikhil Gupta and Abhijit “AB” Gupta started Popo Global, an Indian F&B company which has been, for the longest time, one of the only companies of its sort to keep a very tight control on the expenditure of the company. While the first brand was the mainstay, over three or four years, Popo Global also added two more food brands. Paris Panini, the latest one, offers French-style paninis, sandwiches and wraps apart from also selling crepes.

The other one is called Smash Guys and serves smashed burgers on the go. With the addition of Smash Guys and Paris Panini, Popo Global has more or less tripled its product offering. Popo Global now owns around 40 outlets and the vast majority are located in Bengaluru. During its journey of growth, it has managed to self-finance its way, i.e. without a lot of equity capital, except for a small amount of debt financing, all of it coming from its own revenues.

Popo Global’s profit in FY25 turned out to be nearly 175 crore and it was the only food business making a profit at that scale and ambition which is a very rare thing. Artal Asia, which backed the deal for more than 532 crore, while of course not a name familiar to the Indian startup ecosystem, holds massive clout worldwide in the food industry.

As an affiliate of the Artal Group which is a European-based company which has been very successful in supporting businesses in the food space. Artal Asia has an interesting international portfolio which also includes fast casual chain of the American company CAVA which has turned out to be an American restaurant story. In India, Artal Group had a previous investment in Capital Foods which is a brand known for Ching’s Secret & Smith & Jones. The whole deal was done by them when they bought it in 2024 with a price tag of 5,200 crore.

Selecting Artal Asia as a strategic investor was very conscious on the company’s part. It is a company which knows the nitty-gritty of food business unlike general-purpose investors who simply chase a market which they feel is getting hot. Popo Global chose Artal Asia for their expertise and their track record in the food & beverage industry, as well as for their international market presence and their capability to support the company’s growth globally.

Popo Global is a rare case in the fast food arena that eschews growth via franchising. Each and every outlet of The Pizza Bakery, Paris Panini, and Smash Guys is owned by and operated by the company itself. While franchise models have become the most common method to rapidly expand operations at a low cost, Popo Global has opted for the slower but more manageable road of constructing standardised processes and delivering a quality product across all outlets rather than entrusting that task to third parties.

The fundraising of 532 crore would fund the expansion into several company-owned new stores in India, which will take the brand to major cities like Mumbai, Delhi NCR Hyderabad Chennai, and Pune, as well as a few tier 2 markets that are quite well off. The Gupta brothers have reiterated that product integrity will not be sacrificed just to keep up with the pace of expansion. “Getting Artal Asia on our team allows us to envision a much bigger Popo Global while at the same time staying true to the spirit which brought us to here – quality cannot be compromised, ” the brothers explained in their official statement.

At a valuation of about 1,500 crore, Popo Global illustrates the power of slow, quality-first building in India’s food-service segment. The company wasn’t in a hurry to expand, didn’t lower the standards in exchange for the growth, and didn’t take outside investments before becoming a serious player. Finally, Popo Global with a global partner that understands what a mature food brand looks like is going to figure out the limits of three concepts from Bengaluru that have been doing pretty well so far.
