French AI company Mistral has unveiled a new flagship model which they believe is capable of rivalling the strongest Chinese open-weight model. Mistral Large 4, also known as Le Chonk, is the company’s largest and most capable model to date.
The three-year-old company, widely views as Europe’s strongest AI challenger to US and Chinese competitors, has not released a new model since May. In August, it began offering third-party models to customers, starting with Beijing-based Z.ai’s GLM 5.3.
Mistral Large 4 has strengths across coding, cybersecurity, finance, legal tasks, and image understanding based on the statement released. The model has approximately 1 trillion parameters. Actually, the learned valued underline its capabilities with 49 billion active during processing.
“The model we’re actually announcing today is actually above the Chinese models on certain aspects, including cyber. So the narrative that Europe cannot compete is something that is not true,” CEO Artur Mensch said at a launch event in Abu Dhabi. Mistral said it will be made publicly available on October 27.
However, developers can still access a public preview through Mistral Studio. Mistral is testing the system with cybersecurity specialists, vetted partners, and state authorities ahead of the release.
Open-weight models make it possible for organizations to deploy and customize AI on their own infrastructure. This gives them greater control over data and access. The company revealed that the model was trained from scratch using 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell graphics processors in its own European data centers.

Training data for the new model covered more than 160 languages. It is fascinating to know that the training included every official EU language. Security concerns have been mounting in the last couple of months. This is more so the case among Mistral’s core audience (enterprises and institutions). At the same time, an open-weight model is easier to audit, Stock said.
According to Stock, ML4’s optimized use cases include cybersecurity and finance, but also chip design, which is core to two of Mistral’s main backers — Dutch giant ASML, which led its Series C, and Samsung, which led its Series D last month at a €21 billion valuation (about $24.39 billion).
Cybersecurity experts and government authorities will get the chance to access a version with fewer restrictions to test its capabilities before it can finally be released. Pierre Stock, Mistral’s vice president of science, revealed the model ranks among the strongest open-weight, systems available.
Open-weight means users will be able to download the model from platforms and run it on their own hardware. Many Chinese models are open-weight. On the other hand, most top US models are closed and accessible only through their developers’ infrastructure.
Mistral raised €3 billion ($3.37 billion) in a Series D funding round in September, led by Samsung Electronics, which valued the company at more than €21 billion. With Le Chonk in its corner, the company believes it should still be considered a frontier lab as well.
