Asus’ dual-screen Zenbook DUO impressed reviewers when it was released a couple of years ago, both for its utility and value for money – but it was, to be fair, a little clunky. 2026 UX8407 is a real generational leap, not a whisper refresh. It has a redesigned chassis, a brand new revolutionary hinge, Intel’s brand new Panther Lake silicon and a much larger battery. The final product is a machine that has finally delivered on the promise of its own concept, and one of the most talked about laptops of early 2026.
Design and Build Quality
Asus has gone to town on the new design for the Zenbook Duo. The outer chassis is made from Ceraluminum which is aluminium submerged in a bath of pure water and minerals. It has a smooth, light and reassuringly solid feel, like a really well made piece of pottery with a matte finish. There is absolutely no flex in the lid. The Zenbook DUO weighs 1.65kg with the Bluetooth keyboard attached, which isn’t exactly light when compared to other 14-inch laptops, but it isn’t on the heavy side either especially considering you’re carrying two 14-inch screens and a 99Wh battery in one bundle.
The Hinge: A Groundbreaking redesign
The biggest change on the 2026 model is the new hinge system. The 2026 model solves the main problem of the old hinge creating a clunky step that looked bad and made portrait mode impossible without awkward angling. The new model is more lightweight and minimal in its design. The new design feels like opening a book, with the dual screens perfectly balanced and the hinges completely hidden, so you can set it down flat on your desk. This isn’t cosmetic, it changes the usability of the machine at a fundamental level and makes the dual-screen experience feel cohesive, deliberate, and not forced.
Displays
The dual-screen Zenbook DUO has been completely overhauled by Asus for 2026. Both SKUs now feature new high resolution OLED panels with 144Hz refresh rate. The dual 14-inch OLED screens are great. The higher refresh rate compared to the previous generation makes scrolling, animations and even gaming noticeably smoother. Asus has also included a “Sharing Mode” that lets you flatten the displays and set the laptop between you and another person, with the top screen flipping around for your companion to see it properly — it can be mirrored or extended so they can browse while you work on your screen.
Performance: Intel Panther Lake Takes Center Stage
This Asus Zenbook DUO review is the first look at Intel’s Core Ultra Series 3, formerly known as “Panther Lake”, for many outlets. At the high end, the Core Ultra X9 388H has a powerful integrated GPU and is built on Intel’s 18A process. The hardware is rated up to 45W TDP in the 2026 Zenbook DUO models, compared to the 35-38W sustained of the 2025 Arrow Lake platform, which should mean 10-25% performance gains in sustained loads. The Zenbook DUO scored 3,031 on Geekbench’s single-core test and 17,283 on the multi-core test, easily beating AMD, Qualcomm and even Intel’s last-gen CPU. Apple was the only one that did better with its M5 scoring 4,288 on single-core and 17,926 on multi-core.
Integrated Graphics: RTX 4050 Territory
One of the biggest surprises of the 2026 Zenbook DUO is the new Intel Arc B390 integrated graphics and what they can do. The new Intel Arc B390 iGPU is not only better than the old Arc generation, but its scores are also on par with the GeForce RTX 4050. In Far Cry 6 at the high resolution of 2,880×1,800 running on the Ultra preset using FSR Performance Mode we saw average frame rates north of 70fps – impressive performance from Intel’s latest integrated GPU. “This is a watershed moment for integrated gaming for a machine without a discrete graphics card.”
Keyboard and Input
The 2026 model has seen another upgrade to the detachable keyboard. It’s now even more rigid and stable, with key travel increased to 1.7mm for an extremely comfortable typing experience, with virtually no flex at all in normal laptop mode. The Zenbook keyboard folio includes a full-size 14-inch Zenbook keyboard and a bigger touchpad than before. Asus also rounded the edges, which your wrists might notice on a thicker laptop. The keycaps are a little more coarsely textured to help resist smudges. The touch interface on the screens, however, is another story – gestures can feel fussy and unpredictable, with failed inputs sometimes triggering the wrong actions, making it a much better laptop and semi-desktop than a tablet.
Battery Life
Battery situation is one of the headline improvements of this generation. The Zenbook DUO UX8407 now packs a 99Wh battery, a massive jump from the 75Wh unit in the UX8406. In a basic local video playback test with only one screen on, it lasted for over 21 hours on a single charge. It lasted a still-impressive 10 hours 36 minutes with both screens switched on — double the amount of time the original double-screen Duo lasted in 2024, and longer than the M4 Apple MacBook Pro. The included 100W USB-C charging brick helps stem battery drain, and the ability to use power banks to top up on the go makes the battery story even more compelling.
Ports and Connectivity
Along the left edge, you’ll find a full-size HDMI 2.1 port, a Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. On the right edge is another Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port alongside the power button, and a legacy USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 socket. The two Thunderbolt 4 ports are on par with each other, so there’s no compromise for users on that front. You also get Wi-Fi 7, so wireless connectivity is kept up to speed with the machine’s premium positioning.
Upgradeability and Repairability
The Zenbook DUO (2026) has space for a full-sized M.2 SSD up to 2TB, accessible through a hatch beneath the kickstand. The 32GB RAM however is soldered on. The bottom panel is a lot harder to take off than on regular laptops, given the way the second display is attached and wired, so other than swapping out the SSD, this one should be considered a sealed unit and spec it out appropriately at time of purchase.
Pricing & Configurations
Asus is offering the Zenbook DUO (UX8407) starting at $2,099.99 for the Core Ultra 9 386H model with base Intel Arc graphics. The top-end Core Ultra X9 388H with Arc B390 graphics, 32GB of RAM and a 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD will set you back $2,299.99. You can pick up a 2TB SSD top-end SKU for €2,599 in Europe.
Verdict
The Zenbook DUO UX8407 is the strongest sign yet that ASUS has solved the dual-screen equation. The laptop finally gets the performance this futuristic design has always deserved with the new Intel Core Ultra X9 388H. If you are a multitasker, creator, developer, or power user who lives with multiple windows open, you will definitely love what this machine delivers. The 2026 Zenbook DUO offers users the power they need, when they need it, in terms of performance and flexibility with a broad spectrum of professions including creators, designers, office workers, executives and even gamers. It’s not for everyone — the price is steep, the design is a bit bulkier than a traditional thin-and-light, and Windows touch input still has a ways to go — but for those who need its unique capabilities, there’s nothing else like it on the market.
