Gukesh’s career is one full of inspiration for many. By the time he was turning 11, Dommaraju carried the title of International Master. This is after finishing the mandatory norms in record time.
The International Master title was only the beginning of an interesting career. He earned the title Grandmaster (GM) with a performance rating of 2600 or higher in tournaments. Funny enough, he earned the title after playing at least 27 games. This achievement made him the third-youngest Grandmaster in history.
It was not until July 2022 when Dommaraju’s breakthrough came. The breakthrough; crossing the 2,700 mark to be one of the youngest players in history to do so. By September 2023, he was already India’s highest-rated chess player. That was a significant achievement considering he surpassed Viswanathan Anand, who had held the number one spot for 37 years.
A year later (December 2024), he took home the world champion title. This is after defeating Ding Liren. The achievement made him the youngest World Chess Champion in history. The previous record holder was Garry Kasparov (22) in 1985.
