Sanjay Mehrotra: The Semiconductor Visionary Powering the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Sanjay Mehrotra The Semiconductor Visionary Powering the Age of Artificial Intelligence

The few names of technology that come with the history of achieving the highest levels at a global level of tech industry and still carrying the weight of what that means is one thing, but having the same achievement as the one of Sanjay Mehrotra is even more uncommon. Mehrotra is Chairman and CEO of Micron Technology, the company that produces one of the world’s most critically important semiconductor products, and also one of the co-founders of SanDisk Corporation.

Over a period of time exceeding four decades, through such positions and roles, Mehrotra has influenced the development of memory and storage technologies that essentially underpin not only most of the devices but also data centres and AI systems today. His move from a small town in India i.e. Kanpur to becoming one of the top minds in Silicon Valley highlights his pursuit of knowledge, never-ending experimentation, leadership, and vision which together have changed the world of computing fundamentally.

Early Life and Education

Sanjay Mehrotra came to the world on June 27 1958 in Kanpur, India, and was the youngest of four children in the family. His father was a liaison officer in the cotton industry, and he made the family relocate to New Delhi when Mehrotra was 10 years old. He took a special interest in mathematics and science at a young age, which was supported and reinforced by his father and others in the family. He was sent to Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, a highly respected high school, New Delhi, and eventually completed his father’s desire of going to the U.S. for higher studies.

After enrolling at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani he went on to study and got an undergraduate and a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, respectively from the University of California, Berkeley – an institute that he would later contribute to through various alumni activities and as a member of the Governing Board. Mehrotra was born on June 27 1958 in Kanpur India the youngest of four family members.

The family moved to New Delhi when Mehrotra was ten years old due to his father’s professional reasons – as a liaison officer in the cotton industry, the father was transferred. Even as a child, Mehrotra was captivated by math and science, which were fields his father and his other siblings also encouraged him greatly. Before achieving his dad’s dream of studying in the U.S. he was a student at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, a top high school located in New Delhi. Dad took Mehrotra back home at the time to the city. After that, Dad started his business as a cotton merchant.

He was dad’s idea that Sanjey should study engineering. That means, they enrolled Sanjey at the Birla Institute of Technology & Sc (BITS) in Pilani. Later, he obtained both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley – this was the alma mater to which Mehrotra later contributed as an honored alumnus and Governing Board member.

Co-Founding SanDisk and Transforming Flash Memory

Mehrotra worked as an engineer in an early capacity with Intel Corporation and Seeq Technology first. He co-founded SanDisk Corporation in 1988 with colleagues, Eliyahou Harari and Jack Yuan. The main idea behind the company was commercializing flash memory, storage, of course, which didn’t require power to retain the data, making it non-volatile. SanDisk did the whole thing, from the lab work on flash technology to marketing it for the consumer level in a couple of decades.

This means SanDisk helped millions of people have access to flash storage devices, like memory cards, pen drives, solid-state drives, and other mobile storage solutions. From 2011 until January 2016 when the $19 billion acquisition by Western Digital occurred, Mehrotra was running SanDisk as the CEO and President and during this time the company evolved from a venture to a Fortune 500 company. He has filed over 70 patents for design and flash memory system of non-volatile memory technologies, that portfolio alone demonstrates just how much effort and deep knowledge the person invested into this area for years.

Leading Micron Through the AI Era

Mehrotra was appointed to Micron Technology in 2017 and also became Chairman of the Board with CEO. Since then under his guidance, Micron has emerged as a major player in the artificial intelligence field. AI workloads rely heavily on speed and efficiency of memory and storage – more efficient they are, the more advanced and available AI systems can get. Mehrotra focused Micron’s financial and research resources on developing High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and next-generation DRAM that are fundamental requirements now for AI data centres of the world’s most advanced AI research centres. And to that, in 2019 he was Chairman of the Semiconductor Industry Association, increasing his influence at the level of U.S. semiconductor policy and global supply chain strategy development.

Recognition and Legacy

Merohta’s accomplishments were recognized not only on international level in the field of engineering or technology, but the highest honors for such achievements have been bestowed upon him. In 2006, he was awarded the IEEE Reynold B. Johnson Data Storage Device Technology Award, and in 2019, the Flash Memory Summit gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award. Also, in 2022, he was elected as a member to the renowned National Academy of Engineering – considered the top honor among professionals.

And, he has been conferred with honorary doctorate degrees by Boise State University, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and BITS Pilani – his university of graduation. Besides these industrial achievements, Mehrotra actively supports STEM field education for the less privileged and that means, the American India Foundation has acknowledged his philanthropic leadership. The legacy of his career is a clear example of how technical mastery, business vision, and social responsibility can shape the future.
