A Neighborhood Restaurant with a History
His & Hers is operated by Paul Winestock, director of the youth-focused nonprofit Saving Our Next Generation, and his partner Sheena Alston, a 9/11 first responder who became a nurse on the pandemic front lines at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. It was their first foray into the restaurant business, and that passion for community shows in the atmosphere they’ve created. The second you walk in you get a happy but calm vibe, with a clover wall toward the back of the dining area and a flower-only His & Hers sign that makes you feel like you’re dining in a garden.
The Menu: Comfort Food Done Right
His & Hers is a warm and inviting restaurant that offers a variety of tasty choices. The seafood fried rice, salmon bites and crab sliders are must tries with fabulous food served hot and a great presentation. The menu is loaded with American comfort food with a creative twist. Choices include pecan pear salad, roasted cauliflower, avocado toast, crab stuffed salmon and a Hawaiian ribeye with pureed sweet potatoes and brussel chips. There’s also the aptly named Woodridge burger, with grilled onions and arugula. Breakfast features steak and eggs, shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles and eggs Benedict with lox instead of Canadian bacon. No pork on the menu and a good selection of vegan options.
The lemon pepper wings are a standout dish that diners rave about again and again. Those wings are meant to be flavorful all the way through and the crab hash is getting equal praise – packed full of flavor with peppers, onions, potatoes and juicy crab meat. Meanwhile the chicken and waffles takes its place as a crowd favourite; a perfect mix of sweet with crispy savory chicken.
Drinks & Happy Hour
Sheena Alston, who worked with her son-in-law to create the drink menu, said it includes everything from a Moscow Mule with CBD-infused lavender syrup to a jalapeño-infused tequila drink called the Rhode Island Avenue. Those diners who give the bar staff a run for their money think the balance of alcohol and juice in crafted cocktails is superb. Happy hour is a particular draw with wings, fried catfish bites and cocktails all under $10, making it a great deal in the area. It’s also renowned for its mimosas, so brunch is a popular choice.
The Atmosphere and Vibe
His & Hers is a trendy New American byon that offers take-out delivery outdoor seating, and a full bar. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, the decor refined. It is a lively yet cozy setting, including tables and barstools. Music is a big part of the experience, the music fitting the crowd well, often playing songs that feel nostalgic. It’s just as suitable for a casual night out with friends or a date.
Service: Consistently Warm, But Occasionally Uneven
The staff is usually praised as warm and personable. The owner and team are said to be friendly and respectful and many servers have been praised for their kindness and professionalism. Visitors from out of town often say that walking in feels like coming home. That said, a few reviews mention inconsistency – some guests mention no greeting on arrival and slow drink service during quieter hours, with cocktail prices that felt steep for the quality. These seem to be the exception rather than the rule, but worth remembering during peak times.
The Decision
All in all, His & Hers is a great casual dining spot with phenomenal food, a lively atmosphere, and friendly staff that keep many coming back for more. Overall Google rating is 4.3. A restaurant that mostly delivers. If you’re just popping in for a weekend brunch, a happy hour catch-up or a full dinner, His & Hers brings something that’s more and more rare – a neighbourhood restaurant with a real soul behind it.
