Netflix limited series His & Hers, debuting January 8 2026 reimagines Alice Feeney’ 2020 best-selling mystery novel as a six-episode murder investigation centered on longtime rivals Anna Andrews (Tessa Thompson), the out-of-town news anchor, and Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), the local police detective. The series chronicles the investigation of a small town slayings in the Georgia town of Dahlonega through the eyes of both the newswoman and the local cop.
While we begin to suspect we’re seeing everything through the lens of the characters, our assumptions about the case begin to change when it turns out the characters’ past is farther from over than we expected. In fact, it gets much more complicated than expected as the investigation takes us into the characters’ personal past. The six-episode series, directed in part by William Oldroyd, features the British narrative relocating the story to the American South and it’s still told by two perspectives.
Overall critics have given the series mediocre-to-mixed reviews. On Metacritic, the series is rated a 54 Moiraine based on 21 critics reviews. This score reflects about two-thirds of mixed positives and negatives, and about 30 percent of critics viewing it negatively. Individual Rotten Tomatoes scores for Season 1 ranged from the low-to-mid 70s in some cases, although individual responses ranged from excellent to very poor. The positive reviews pointed out how well Thompson and Bernthal worked off each other to create “sparkling” chemistry.
IGN gave it a 9/10 rating, noting how the dynamic of the lead actors elevates the typical murder mystery into a ‘deep-dive of grief, marriage and parenting’, with a shocking resolution that makes a re-watch worthwhile. Variety called the series “deliciously bonkers”, citing how well the layered ending played into societal prejudices against forgotten people in the world, and how extraordinary the leads were, while time flitted by in six quick episodes. Screen Rant called it a “gripping” and “addictive” adaptation of the murder-mystery thriller story by Feeney that continually twists and shifts the narrative to keep audiences guessing.
Elsewhere, it was met with a more lukewarm response. The Hollywood Reporter in particular was disappointed with Oldroyd’s inability to sustain a feeling of excitement and in the final episodes, a weak ending with one clearly signposted and the other so stupid that it seemed to parody the genre. RogerEbert.com were scathing about the series because of its patronizing tone, referring to it as an insult to TV audiences; the book-end revelations were absurd, the cop characters completely unbelievable, and the handling of serious issues like sexual violence, bullying and dementia so grotesque that they were galling.

Forbes was a little kinder in its summing up concluding that it was a ‘big disappointment’ after an impressive beginning, citing clichd dialogue, lackadaisical close-up shots and a final reveal that leaves viewers rolling their eyes. Hugh referred to Truth is the beginning had hooked viewers in with its ‘Southern couplets and red herrings’ but by the end the story was based on relying on revealing holes in the narrative.
Scores from viewers were also a mixed bag. It registered around 5.7 on Metacritic based on dozens of individual scores. While millions loved the cast (Favreau, Thompson and Bernthal) and the binge-ability of the storytelling many found the twists and turns to be clever or brain-blowingly brilliant. Others found the characters unlikeable, the plotting forced and contrived or unrealistic, and the tone to be cheesy. Video game parent reviews on Common Sense Media warn that it is strictly 18+ for sex, sexual violence, language and explicit content.
Though very divided in their opinion, His & Hers was a commercial winner. In the first semester of 2026, it turned into the most-watched title on Netflix globally with some even saying it was the best show that period. By mid-Year, His & Hers was already being hailed for its 100 million views worldwide. On some occasions, its new metrics beat even the revival shows. That is precisely what made audiences choose a fast-binge watching of an absurd shocking plot and mystery wrapped up together which is something not seen every day with great star power. The cast of Pablo Schreiber, Crystal Fox, Sunita Mani, and Marin Ireland supported the story of the uncovering of the secrets and the breakdown of family in the small town.
The bottom line is that His & Hers became one of the controversial titles in a sea of 2026 streaming thrillers. Those who like its performance level, loss and protection themes, that it subverts expectations in a very surprising twist of events, etc. are delighted. But, critics say it is a shiny but empty performance that puts twists first with little or no attention to a logical narrative. Whether a viewer finds it gripping entertainment or a frustrating piece of confusion mostly it still is a matter of how much one is prepared to accept the “his and hers” perspective which is being told in the two characters’ point of view all the time. The six episodes still can be seen on Netflix for anyone who wants to judge the show for themselves!
