Early Life & Schooling

Gaël Sébastien Monfils was born in Paris, and raised there by parents of Caribbean origin. His father, Rufin Monfils, is from Guadeloupe and was a professional footballer before joining France Telecom. His mother, Sylvette Cartesse, was from Martinique and a nurse. Monfils has a younger brother, Daryl, who also played professional tennis and teamed up with him in doubles at the 2012 Open Sud de France.

Monfils has been a great athlete since he was a kid. He started playing tennis at the age of just 2½ in a Paris suburb of La Courneuve. He was a star athlete at school, winning French national 100-metre titles at under-13 and under-14 level. Coaches believed he had the potential to make an Olympic final in the 100m, but his love for tennis won out. He turned professional in 2004 at the age of 17 with little formal higher education behind him having concentrated hard on his sporting development from an early age.

Career

Monfils burst on to the scene as the world’s top junior in 2004, a rare feat which saw him win the boys’ singles titles at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. In that year he was named ITF Junior World Champion and made his ATP debut in Metz. In 2005 he won his first ATP title in Sopot, Poland and was voted ATP Newcomer of the Year

With a career stretching more than two decades, with plenty of bright moments but also injuries, Monfils is 586-356 in singles and has won 13 ATP titles, including three ATP 500 titles. His best results at Grand Slams include reaching the semifinals at the 2008 French Open and 2016 US Open and the quarterfinals at the Australian Open (2016, 2022). He made three Masters 1000 finals and qualified for the ATP Finals in 2016.

Monfils is one of a handful of players in the Open Era to reach at least one ATP final in 19 consecutive seasons (2005-2023). He was the oldest ATP champion in the modern era (since 1990) when he claimed the 2025 Auckland title at the age of 38. In 2023 he won the Stockholm Open as the lowest ranked winner in tournament history at 37. He has chronic injuries (knee, wrist, shoulder, foot and neck problems that saw him miss 13 Grand Slams) but has shown incredible toughness, with more than 550 career wins and French records for hard-court victories and French Open match wins.

In October 2025, Monfils announced that 2026 would be his last season. He’s kept fighting with passion, getting wildcards and emotional tributes as he gets ready to retire.

Private life

Monfils has been admired for years for his happy-go-lucky personality and positive outlook, despite the physical toll of professional tennis. He resides in Vaud, Switzerland and stays close to his French origins and Caribbean heritage. Renowned for his sense of humour, love of music and ability to connect with fans through entertaining on court antics and post match celebrations.
