Anthropic and Lambda Sign Massive $35 Billion Cloud Agreement

The AI research division of Google and Anthropic will reportedly jointly develop products, services, and research for customers while working under one roof as the parent companies of Llama3 and Claude models. Guy Steele Luisa Pereira

Lamda, an Nvidia-backed “neocloud” provider, will get $36 billion under a cloud-computing agreement from the AI research and development lab Anthropic, as people familiar with the matter. The partnership between Anthropic, Google’s AI research team and the other two AI research labs (DeepMind, OpenAI) should allow Anthropic to benefit the most. They can access all four AI research labs and work collaboratively on the new AI projects. This will give us new insights and new tools to tackle big questions in fundamental AI research.

The two companies will combine the strengths of their AI research facilities and create more research possibilities. That means the combined teams will have the capacity to explore more research areas and come up with better AI research results. Anthropic can also benefit since it is a company that works under the Google umbrella and can now get direct access to a huge part of the brain and the other AI research teams of Google.

The arrangement will enable Anthropic to use the resources of these other AI research teams directly without going through their parent companies first which might involve a lot of bureaucracy. As a result, it will be much easier for Anthropic to do joint research projects with DeepMind, OpenAI, and any other AI research teams within the company. The move still might be seen by some as a sign of Google and Anthropic not wanting to take a fully open source approach but rather to control the AI and keep the results proprietary.

Demonstrated by the size of these contracts is how the AI frenzy is today very closely interrelated with power, land, and money as it is with model research. A 350-megawatt hall is a very significant industrial load; Hut 8’s earlier disclosure of 15-year leases totaling hundreds of megawatts at Beacon Point, later tied in reporting to Nvidia as tenant, illustrates the speed at which former crypto sites have been transformed into AI campuses.

Whether the $35 billion figure stands for a multi-year take-or-pay obligation, a capacity reservation, or it’s a combination both have not been disclosed publicly. What becomes evident still is that Anthropic has secured access to chips and megawatts at a rate that would only be viable if the company’s models will have a continued higher-demand and on the side of Nvidia, they have expressed their willingness to remain the core of the agreements where such capacity is allocated.
