In light of its plans to introduce an AI-powered voice assistant called “Siri AI” later in 2026, Apple has been considering a payment scheme for news content through which user queries for information on recent headlines would be able to bring the latest and most correct news via Siri’s answers as a report by Apple. The Wall Street Journal says the company has recently approached several publishers for negotiations leading to multi-year deals that would be a part of Siri’s AI content and the latest information through which the device would have the ability to respond to a user’s question.
As the article, one notable difference between the payment scheme and other similar deals is that instead of being paid through a fixed licensing arrangement and getting the access of a publisher’s archive or an ongoing output, Apple’s proposal will have an aspect of the variable compensation method. That is, when their contents are actually utilized by Siri in giving out the response, that is when the publishers will get the money for their work. Apple is also considering setting aside a nine-figure sum, approximately $100 million, for these payments, reported the Wall Street Journal.
Apple will be rolling out a major upgrade to its Siri, which is generally referred to as the Siri AI voice assistant. This will happen after several platform updates including iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and the others at the end of 2026. The company has always kept its promise that Siri will be a smarter assistant and more capable of handling complex questions and timely information efficiently. Being able to consistently deliver up-to-date news content is regarded as the most crucial feature to ensure that outdated or incomplete answers do not creep up when users inquire about events that are being covered currently or developments in these events. At this point, they are talking mainly about news content with current information so that Siri would deliver a relevant response without going into past news. But the details of all this may still be in the secret phase of their business with Apple refusing to be a comment for it.
Apple is already doing commerce deal with lots of news outlets via its Apple News+ subscription offering with the content payment being based on some of the engagement factors like clicks. Besides, earlier deals with some publishers included AI training rights. Still, the new negotiation seems mainly a conversation about how to have Siri access news content and not necessarily a conversation about AI training. The way Apple operates seems to indicate that technology corporations and media publishers are experiencing friction and are making changes. A few well-known publishers have entered into some arrangement agreements with companies like OpenAI and News Corp has been the one for example.
Yet, some other publishers like The New York Times have taken a different approach altogether and are suing over using their content without their permission by AI systems. A “pay-per-use” strategy might help publishers secure a consistent revenue stream from their content which is not only more reliable but also has room for scalability, as AI assistants start taking a step as a middleman or a point of reference for users who were getting information to the news media that used to be the source of traffic for them through the article or the story.
Through an agreement, such a move would put Apple and others alike in the position where, they would offer, not only the ability of a human assistant of the user, but they would make a payment directly to content creators for this sort of content usage by the AI and the human assistant. Yet, it is very likely that details of such agreements or who has already been involved as a publisher could not be released to public because those are sensitive things for business reasons. It will be up to Apple if they decide whether or how fast the agreements can be concluded before the release of Apple’s public version of the AI assistant called Siri.
In any case, technology and media industries shall closely monitor what happens between the two sides because the relationship between artificial intelligence systems on one side and original journalism, journalistic content, media articles, and journalists, on the other side, is what needs commercial definition. At the moment, the main question to be answered is whether technology companies want to be a collaborator or a competitor of the media sector by providing news content through their AI tools, but it might not be so soon before the answer will be crystal clear to the public either.
