Dev Patel Career

Patel’s professional acting career goes way back to the British teen drama Skins (2007-13), taking up the role of British Pakistani teen Anwar Kharral for two seasons (2007-08). It is while playing this role that he attracted the attention of Director Danny Boyle, who was searching for the right actor to play Jamal Malik in ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’

After five tough auditions, he landed the role that would eventually change his life in August 2007, replacing Ruslaan Mumtaz. Life after ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ did have its own share of ups and downs.

The film’s amazing run didn’t guarantee overnight success. “There wasn’t anything, and I wasn’t working,” he said. “I just stepped off the red carpet, surrounded by all these amazing actors and Oscar winners, and then there was nothing.”

Dev didn’t stop believing and kept auditioning, and with each project he was part of, he settled for roles showcasing his ability to inhabit different characters, challenging stereotypes and defying expectations.

The results were breathtaking performances in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012) and its sequel, Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015). He has also featured in the intense action-thriller Hotel Mumbai, sci-fi film Chappie, and the heart-wrenching drama Lion.

Personal Life and Relationships

Patel has been in a relationship with Australian actress Tilda Cobham-Hervey since 2017. The pair is widely known for maintaining a low public profile and always showing mutual support for each other’s careers. They have worked together on a couple of projects, including the film Hotel Mumbai, where Cobham-Hervey played an important role.

Tilda Cobham-Hervey’s acting credits include I Am Woman, Burn, Young Woman and the Sea, and 52 Tuesdays, as well as the TV shows, Barracuda and The Kettering Incident.

Awards and Achievements

Dev’s debut film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is one that has won him numerous accolades, including the British Independent Film Award, the National Board of Review Award (NBR), the Chicago Film Critics Association Award, and two Black Reel Awards for Best Actor and Best Breakthrough Performance.

He has also won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor in the movie Lion (2016) and was nominated for an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and SAG Award. In 2020, he was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for his role in Modern Love.

Dev Patel’s success is key not just for his own career but for the wide landscape of Hollywood. His success has paved the way for increased representation and challenging industry stereotypes.
